Most In-Demand Tech Skills in Sweden (2026)

2026-09-18 · Petter Larsen

Which technologies do you need for a developer job in Sweden? We counted every technology mentioned in 3,186 Swedish tech job ads posted in 2026, from Stockholm startups to automotive and defence companies in Gothenburg and Linköping.

Python is the most requested language, CI/CD and Git are almost everywhere, and Sweden asks for C++ and C far more often than Norway does. If you have an embedded or systems background, Sweden is the better fit of the two.

Python is in one in three Swedish tech ads. It's used for backend services, data and machine learning, test automation and tooling in embedded teams, which makes it the safest single language to invest in for Sweden.

Java leads the business backend (Spring is in 5% of ads), with C# and .NET close behind. Go and Rust are small but clearly present, and Go is more than twice as common as in Norway (2.7%).

Sweden is an embedded and systems market

This is what sets Sweden apart. C++ is in 25.3% of tech ads and C in 15.4%, against 6% and 2.3% in Norway. The embedded toolchain shows up too:

  • Linux: 20.1%
  • Embedded Linux: 4.9%
  • MATLAB: 4.8%
  • RTOS: 3.6%
  • Functional safety (ISO 26262 and similar): 3.4%
  • Simulink: 3%
  • AUTOSAR: 2.4%

These roles come from Sweden's large automotive, defence, telecom and industrial sectors, and about 43% of embedded and hardware ads are English-friendly. If you have C/C++ experience, make the domain (automotive, real-time, safety-critical, networking) as visible on your CV as the language.

CI/CD, Git and test automation are everywhere

Nearly a third of Swedish tech ads mention CI/CD (31.7%), which puts it ahead of every programming language except Python. Git is in 25.9%. Jenkins (7%) is far more common here than in Norway (1.3%).

Test automation (10.6%) is a clear Swedish strength, which is good news for QA engineers and for developers who like testing. Browse QA engineer jobs in Sweden.

Cloud: Azure leads, AWS is close behind

Azure is in 20.3% of Swedish tech ads, AWS in 16.1% and Google Cloud in 9.1%. That's much more balanced than Norway, where Azure is mentioned more than twice as often as AWS. Any of the three is a reasonable bet in Sweden.

Docker and Kubernetes go together

Docker (15.9%) and Kubernetes (15.8%) are mentioned almost equally often. In Norway, Kubernetes is well ahead (15.1% vs 9.4%), but Swedish ads still name Docker explicitly. Infrastructure as Code (7.4%) and Terraform (7%) round out the platform stack.

React and TypeScript on the frontend

React (16.4%) and TypeScript (16.1%) are the default pair, ahead of JavaScript (9.7%), Angular (6.2%) and Node.js (6%). Angular is almost twice as common as in Norway (3.4%), so it's worth knowing as a second framework. Browse React jobs in Sweden.

AI shows up as a side skill

LLMs / generative AI are in 9% of tech ads and machine learning in 7.1%. As in Norway, they show up in general developer roles, not only in data science.

Agile is the most common word of all

If we had included ways of working in the ranking, Agile would be #1 at 33.8%, ahead of Python. DevOps as a practice (22%) and Scrum (7.7%) are common too. Swedish employers care about how you work in a team, so describe your setup (sprints, code reviews, ownership) in your CV, not just your tools.

Swedish language and security clearance

53.2% of Swedish tech ads are written in English, and 49% are English-friendly (in English and not asking for Swedish), far more than in Norway. At the same time, 27.4% of all tech ads explicitly ask for Swedish, and 32.7% explicitly ask for good English.

13.1% of tech ads mention a security check (säkerhetsprövning, säkerhetsklass) and 11.2% mention citizenship, mostly in defence and government roles. Both are covered in Do you need Norwegian or Swedish for a tech job?

What to learn for a software developer job in Sweden

Starting out: Python, SQL and Git, then add a CI/CD pipeline to your projects. That alone covers a large share of Swedish ads.

Backend developer: Java or C#, plus Docker/Kubernetes, REST APIs and one cloud. See backend developer jobs in Sweden.

Embedded or systems developer: C/C++ and Linux, plus Python for tooling and tests. RTOS, AUTOSAR, functional safety or MATLAB/Simulink experience makes you stand out.

Frontend developer: React and TypeScript, with Angular as a useful second framework for enterprise roles. See frontend developer jobs in Sweden.

Data: Python and SQL, plus ETL/pipelines and one cloud. Data and AI roles are also the most English-friendly in Sweden. See data engineer jobs in Sweden.

How we counted

  • Data: 4,673 unique job ads posted in Sweden from January to September 2026, collected by Nordic Tech Jobs from Swedish job boards, including startup job boards. Reposted ads are counted once.
  • Tech ads only: we kept an ad if its title is a tech role (developer, engineer, architect, DevOps, data, security, IT and so on) or if it mentions at least two core technologies. That left 3,186 tech job ads.
  • Counting: each technology is counted once per ad, whether the ad is in Swedish or English. Percentages are shares of the 3,186 tech ads.
  • Ways of working such as Agile and Scrum are left out of the ranking.
