2026-10-10 · Petter Larsen
Moving to Denmark from the US as a software developer is fast: with a well-paid offer, you get a Danish work visa without a labor market test, usually within a month. And most experienced developers earn over $100,000.
- Visa: Pay Limit Scheme, with a salary of at least 552,000 DKK (about $84,000) a year.
- Processing: about one month. Certified employers can get you started right away.
- Median developer salary: 66,853 DKK a month including pension, about $122,000 a year.
- $100k+: most developers with five or more years of experience.
- Top 10% of senior engineers: about $217,000 in total pay.
Why is Denmark hiring developers from abroad?
Denmark is one of Europe's fastest-growing rich economies:
- Fast growth. GDP grew 3.9% in 2024 and 3.5% in 2025, more than twice the EU average.
- High starting point. Labor costs are the second highest in the EU (€51.70 an hour against €34.90), and GDP per capita is in the world's top 15.
- Hungry for skilled workers. Employment is high and unemployment low. There aren't enough Danes to fill the roles, so employers hire many foreigners.
That's why Denmark has fast visa routes for skilled workers, and why developers find strong demand on top of high pay.
How do you move to Denmark from the US?
- Get an offer above the pay limit.
- Apply for a work permit with SIRI. You and your employer each fill in part, and you pay a 6,810 DKK fee.
- Get a CPR number at your municipality or an International Citizen Service center. You need it for MitID, a bank account and a doctor.
- Bring your family. Your partner can work in Denmark too.
What do you need for a Danish work visa?
The Pay Limit Scheme has one main rule: a salary of at least 552,000 DKK a year, or 46,000 DKK a month, with pension and holiday allowance counted. Mid-level developers in Copenhagen clear it easily (median 54,080 DKK a month), but junior offers can fall short, so check before you sign.
- Processing: one month, up to three if SIRI needs more information.
- Bank account: your salary must go into a Danish account within 180 days.
- Changing jobs: you can start once you've applied for a new permit.
If your employer is SIRI-certified, the Fast-track scheme lets you start work right away on a provisional permit, since Americans enter visa-free. See SIRI's Pay Limit Scheme rules.

How are Americans taxed in Denmark?
Denmark has the highest income taxes in Scandinavia, so compare take-home pay. High earners can ask about the researcher tax scheme, a flat rate for up to seven years that's open to any well-paid specialist. You still file a US return, but the foreign tax credit usually prevents double taxation, and a social security agreement covers pensions.
Can you get a tech job in Denmark without speaking Danish?
In Copenhagen, usually yes. Many product companies, scale-ups and international firms work in English, while the public sector often expects Danish. Startups are a good way in: browse startup jobs in Denmark.

- Flat hierarchies. You're expected to challenge your manager.
- Bikes everywhere. Cycling is the fastest way around Copenhagen.
- Housing is the hard part in Copenhagen. Budget up to three months' rent as a deposit.
