Move to Sweden from the US: Work Visa & Tech Jobs 2026

2026-10-09 · Petter Larsen

Moving to Sweden from the US is the easiest Nordic option for English-speaking developers: half of all tech job ads in Sweden are open to English speakers. With a job offer, the Swedish work permit is usually decided within 30 days.

  • Visa: work permit from the Migration Agency, based on a job offer.
  • Salary requirement: 34,470 SEK a month. Developers under 25 already average 36,100 SEK.
  • Processing: 30-day target. Most took 18–26 days in 2025.
  • Median developer salary: 53,500 SEK a month, about $64,000 a year.
  • $100k+: senior engineers at international product companies, counting bonus and stock.

How do you move to Sweden from the US?

  1. Get an offer from a Swedish employer.
  2. Your employer starts the work permit application online, and you complete your part from the US.
  3. Register with Skatteverket after you arrive to get a personnummer, which you need for a bank account, BankID and healthcare.
  4. Bring your family. Your partner can work in Sweden too.

What do you need for a Swedish work permit?

  • Pay and terms on par with Swedish collective agreements, and at least 34,470 SEK a month.
  • Employer insurance for health, life, occupational injury and pension. Employers with a collective agreement already have it.
  • A job ad posted in the EU for at least 10 days before the offer.
  • Your own health insurance, only if you stay a year or less.

You can't start work before the permit is granted. Permits follow your contract, up to two years at a time, with permanent residence possible after four years. Startups under five years old with fewer than 100 employees only need to pay 75% of the median salary. See Migrationsverket's work permit rules.

What is the software developer salary in Sweden in USD?

Clearly lower than in the US. From Statistics Sweden's 2025 figures:

  • Median: 53,500 SEK a month, about $64,000 a year.
  • Stockholm: 59,400 SEK a month on average.
  • Top 10%: 72,600 SEK a month, about $87,000 a year in base salary.

To earn $100,000+, target international product companies in Stockholm, such as Spotify, and reach senior level. On Levels.fyi, the top 25% of senior engineers make about 947,000 SEK ($95,000) in total pay and the top 10% about 1,179,000 SEK ($118,000), so aim just above the top 25%. On top: the ITP1 pension, at least 25 days of vacation and public healthcare.

How are Americans taxed in Sweden?

Municipal income tax is about 30–35%, plus 20% state tax on the highest part of your salary, with no health insurance premiums. You still file a US return, but the foreign tax credit usually prevents double taxation, and a social security agreement covers pensions.

Can you get a tech job in Sweden without speaking Swedish?

Yes. 49% of tech job ads in Sweden are open to English speakers, against 18% in Norway. Stockholm's startups and product companies are the most international, and embedded C/C++ developers have many options around Gothenburg and Linköping. Filter for tech jobs in Sweden with visa sponsorship.

What is it like to live and work in Sweden?

  • Work-life balance, with rare overtime and daily fika (coffee breaks).
  • 480 days of parental leave per child, and capped daycare fees.
  • Housing takes effort. Stockholm rentals have long queues, so start with a sublet.
  • Long winters, and most Swedes take three or four weeks off in July.
