Norway vs Sweden Tech Jobs: Which Stack Gets Hired Where?

2026-09-20 · Petter Larsen

From the outside, Norway and Sweden look alike: high salaries, good work-life balance and strong demand for developers. But their tech job markets ask for quite different things. We compared 2,058 Norwegian and 3,186 Swedish tech job ads from 2026 to find out where your stack fits best.

Norway vs Sweden in four lines

  • Norway is a Microsoft and cloud market: Azure, Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Power BI and .NET are all clearly more common than in Sweden.
  • Sweden is an embedded, systems and Java market: C++, C, Java, Linux, Jenkins and test automation are much more common than in Norway.
  • Both agree on the basics: Python is the #1 language, SQL sits at about 21%, and Kubernetes and React are equally common.
  • For English speakers, Sweden is far more open: 49% of tech ads are English-friendly, against 18.1% in Norway.

Norway vs Sweden: tech skills more common in each country, 2026

One thing to keep in mind when reading the numbers: Swedish ads list more technologies, 7.3 per tech ad against 5.9 in Norway. That lifts most Swedish percentages a little, so the cases where Norway comes out higher mean more.

The Microsoft ecosystem is the big one. Azure, Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, Power Platform, .NET and PowerShell are all more common in Norway, even though Swedish ads list more technologies overall.

Norwegian data teams also favour the modern data stack: Databricks, dbt and Fabric are two to six times more common than in Sweden. And Kotlin is in 7.7% of Norwegian ads, often as a Java alternative on the server, not only for Android.

Norway asks more for IT infrastructure and security skills too: firewalls (4.5% vs 0.9%), IAM (4.2% vs 2.1%) and Cisco (2.6% vs 0.5%).

Embedded and systems programming is what sets Sweden apart. C++ is four times as common as in Norway, and C more than six times, with the embedded toolchain (Embedded Linux, RTOS, functional safety, MATLAB/Simulink, AUTOSAR) close behind. That reflects Sweden's large automotive, defence, telecom and industrial sectors.

Java is in more than one in five Swedish tech ads, almost twice the Norwegian share. Swedish ads also lean harder on engineering practices: CI/CD, Git, Jenkins and test automation are all far more common, and so is Agile (33.8% vs 16.4%). Go is more than twice as common in Sweden, and Rust is at 3.7% against 2.4%.

What both countries agree on

  • Python is the #1 programming language in both.
  • SQL is at 20.9% in both.
  • Kubernetes (15.1% vs 15.8%) and React (15.1% vs 16.4%) are almost equally common.
  • AI skills are established in both, with LLMs / generative AI at 10.4% and 9%.
  • Google Cloud is the third cloud in both (8.5% vs 9.1%).

For English speakers, Sweden is the easier market by a wide margin. Norway is harder on language, but a strong Microsoft or data profile can still get you in, especially at startups, which are the most English-friendly employers in both countries. How we compared them

Both countries use the same method: tech job ads posted in 2026 (Norway from mid-February, Sweden from January), with each technology counted once per ad. Percentages are shares of tech ads in each country, and the number of ads reflects the job boards we collect from, not the size of each market. The full method, and the complete top-15 lists, are in the Norway and Sweden posts.
