Startup Jobs in Norway & Sweden: What Startups Hire For (2026)
2026-09-28 · Petter Larsen
What do startups in Norway and Sweden look for when they hire, and how is that different from a tech job at a bank, a consultancy or the public sector?
So far in 2026, we've collected 178 startup tech jobs from 58 companies: 72 jobs from 30 startups in Norway and 106 jobs from 28 startups in Sweden. We compared them with 5,066 other tech job ads to find out what belongs at the top of your CV. You can search the current openings under startup jobs in Norway and startup jobs in Sweden.
What startups want, in short
- A modern product stack. LLMs / generative AI, AWS, TypeScript, React, Google Cloud and Terraform are all far more common in startup ads.
- Much less enterprise tech. Java, Azure, C#, .NET, Spring and Jenkins show up far less.
- Rarely the local language. Only 1.1% of startup ads ask for Norwegian and 1.7% for Swedish, against about 18% at other employers.
- A way of working. "Ownership" is in 59.6% of startup ads (vs 21.1% elsewhere), and 21.3% offer equity or stock options (vs 0.9%).
- Fewer degree requirements. 24.2% of startup ads mention a university degree, against 41.8% of other tech ads.
Startup jobs vs other tech jobs in Norway and Sweden
The sample is small, and one startup posting many similar ads could skew it, so the tables also show how many different startups mention each skill.
| Skill | Startup ads | Startups mentioning it | Other tech ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| LLMs / generative AI | 39.3% | 27 | 8.5% |
| AWS | 35.4% | 22 | 14.2% |
| TypeScript | 34.3% | 28 | 14.2% |
| Python | 30.3% | 21 | 29.9% |
| React | 29.8% | 27 | 15.4% |
| CI/CD | 28.1% | 22 | 27.6% |
| Google Cloud | 25.8% | 13 | 8.3% |
| Kubernetes | 23.6% | 17 | 15.3% |
| SQL | 20.8% | 23 | 20.9% |
| Terraform | 19.7% | 11 | 7.5% |
| Go | 18.0% | 10 | 4.1% |
| BigQuery | 16.3% | 7 | 1.1% |
| Azure | 14.0% | 9 | 24.4% |
| Machine learning | 14.0% | 15 | 8.1% |
| PostgreSQL | 9.0% | 13 | 5.6% |
| Node.js | 8.4% | 11 | 5.0% |

And the skills that are much less common at startups:
| Skill | Startup ads | Other tech ads |
|---|---|---|
| Java | 2.8% | 18.0% |
| Azure | 14.0% | 24.4% |
| C# | 7.9% | 14.8% |
| C++ | 11.2% | 17.9% |
| C | 3.9% | 10.5% |
| .NET | 5.6% | 11.3% |
| Spring | 0% | 4.3% |
| Jenkins | 0.6% | 4.9% |
| SQL Server | 0% | 3.9% |
| Microsoft 365 | 0.6% | 4.1% |
Python, SQL and CI/CD are just as common at startups as everywhere else. They're the safe core of any tech CV in Norway and Sweden.
A few smaller skills are very common in the ads of a handful of startups: Rust (15.7%, but only 4 startups), Cloudflare (12.4%, 1 startup), OpenTelemetry (11.2%, 3 startups) and ClickHouse (8.4%, 4 startups). They're real signals for those companies, not a general trend.
What startups in Sweden look for
106 startup tech ads from 28 companies, compared with 3,080 other Swedish tech ads:

| Skill | Swedish startups | Startups mentioning it | Other Swedish tech ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| LLMs / generative AI | 55.7% | 18 | 7.4% |
| AWS | 45.3% | 13 | 15.1% |
| TypeScript | 42.5% | 16 | 15.2% |
| Google Cloud | 35.8% | 9 | 8.2% |
| React | 34.9% | 13 | 15.8% |
| CI/CD | 30.2% | 12 | 31.8% |
| Terraform | 28.3% | 7 | 6.3% |
| Python | 25.5% | 9 | 33.5% |
| Go | 23.6% | 5 | 5.3% |
| BigQuery | 23.6% | 5 | 1.2% |
| Kubernetes | 22.6% | 9 | 15.6% |
| Azure | 17.9% | 6 | 20.4% |
Swedish startups are AI-first and cloud-native. More than half of their tech ads mention LLMs or generative AI, and 18 of the 28 startups mention it at least once. They run on AWS and Google Cloud, write TypeScript and React, and use Go and Terraform far more than other Swedish employers.
What they don't ask for is the classic Swedish enterprise and embedded stack: C++ (5.7% vs 25.9%), Java (1.9% vs 22%), C (2.8% vs 15.8%), Linux (6.6% vs 20.6%) and Jenkins (0% vs 7.2%). Only 2.8% of Swedish startup ads are embedded roles, against 11.6% elsewhere.
They barely mention Agile, either: 0.9% of Swedish startup ads, against 34.9% of other Swedish tech ads. Startups describe how they work in other words: ownership (68.9%), fast-paced (22.6%) and product mindset (12.3%).

What startups in Norway look for
72 startup tech ads from 30 companies, compared with 1,986 other Norwegian tech ads:

| Skill | Norwegian startups | Startups mentioning it | Other Norwegian tech ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Python | 37.5% | 12 | 24.3% |
| Kubernetes | 25.0% | 8 | 14.8% |
| Linux | 25.0% | 7 | 10.9% |
| CI/CD | 25.0% | 10 | 21.1% |
| SQL | 23.6% | 12 | 20.8% |
| TypeScript | 22.2% | 12 | 12.7% |
| React | 22.2% | 14 | 14.8% |
| AWS | 20.8% | 9 | 12.9% |
| C++ | 19.4% | 7 | 5.5% |
| Machine learning | 19.4% | 7 | 9.9% |
| PostgreSQL | 18.1% | 10 | 5.2% |
| LLMs / generative AI | 15.3% | 9 | 10.3% |
| Embedded Linux | 13.9% | 5 | 0.9% |
| Azure | 8.3% | 3 | 30.6% |
Norwegian startups break with the Norwegian norm. The typical Norwegian tech job is Azure-heavy, but only 8.3% of startup ads mention Azure, and AWS is more than twice as common. The rest of the Microsoft stack drops away too: .NET (4.2% vs 12.9%), Microsoft 365 (1.4% vs 9.5%), and Databricks and Entra ID don't appear at all.
Python, PostgreSQL and machine learning lead instead. PostgreSQL is more than three times as common as at other Norwegian employers.
There's also a hardware and deep-tech side: C++, Linux and Embedded Linux are much more common at Norwegian startups than elsewhere in Norway, spread across five to seven startups each.
(Security clearance shows up in 19.4% of Norwegian startup ads, but all of those come from just two companies.)

Norwegian vs Swedish startups
| Norwegian startups | Swedish startups | |
|---|---|---|
| #1 skill | Python (37.5%) | LLMs / generative AI (55.7%) |
| Main cloud | AWS (20.8%) | AWS (45.3%) and Google Cloud (35.8%) |
| Frontend | React / TypeScript (22.2%) | TypeScript (42.5%), React (34.9%) |
| Distinctive | C++, Embedded Linux, PostgreSQL | Go, Terraform, BigQuery |
| Most common role type | Data / AI / ML (19.4%) | Data / AI / ML (29.2%) |
Startups in both countries hire a lot of data and AI people. Data / AI / ML roles make up 25.3% of startup tech ads, more than twice their share at other employers (11.4%). IT operations roles are almost absent (0.6% vs 5%).
How startups describe the job
| Phrase in the ad | Startup ads | Other tech ads |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | 59.6% | 21.1% |
| Fast-paced | 25.3% | 4.8% |
| Autonomy / working independently | 24.7% | 26.1% |
| Equity / stock options | 21.3% | 0.9% |
| Full-stack | 20.8% | 12.2% |
| Remote / flexible location | 16.9% | 13.3% |
| Product mindset | 7.3% | 0.8% |
| Customer / user contact | 6.2% | 1.7% |
| Early stage (seed / Series A, founding team) | 3.9% | 0.3% |
Ownership is the startup keyword: six in ten startup ads use it, almost three times the rate elsewhere. One in five offers equity, which other employers almost never mention in the ad, and one in five asks for full-stack profiles, which fits small teams where people cover more ground.
Autonomy isn't unique to startups, though. "Working independently" is just as common in other Norwegian and Swedish tech ads, so it won't set you apart.
Fewer language and degree requirements
| Requirement | Startup ads | Other tech ads |
|---|---|---|
| University degree mentioned | 24.2% | 41.8% |
| Norwegian required | 1.1% | 17.8% |
| Swedish required | 1.7% | 17.9% |
| English required | 18.0% | 27.5% |
| Security clearance | 7.9% | 16.5% |
Startups are the most English-friendly employers in both countries: 83.3% of Norwegian and 93.4% of Swedish startup tech ads are in English with no local-language requirement (see Do you need Norwegian or Swedish for a tech job?). They care less about formal degrees, so a strong portfolio carries more weight.
How to tailor your CV for startup jobs in Norway and Sweden
- Lead with the modern stack you have. TypeScript, React, Python, AWS or Google Cloud, Terraform and Kubernetes belong near the top, not buried in a long list.
- Show AI experience, even small. If you've built anything with an LLM API, RAG or AI agents, put it on your CV with a link. In Sweden, more than half of startup ads ask for it.
- Write ownership, not tasks. Replace "worked on the payment service" with "owned the payment service from design to production, cut failed payments by 30%".
- Show you ship fast. Mention release frequency, side projects you launched, or features you took from idea to production.
- Show breadth. A full-stack project (frontend, backend, database and deployment) shows you can cover more ground in a small team.
- Don't lead with enterprise buzzwords. "Agile", "Scrum" and "SAFe" are almost absent from startup ads. Put your outcomes first.
- Link to real work. With fewer degree requirements, a GitHub profile, a deployed app or a technical blog carries more weight.
- Tailor per country. For Norwegian startups, add Python, PostgreSQL and (if relevant) C++ or embedded Linux. For Swedish startups, add AI, AWS or Google Cloud, Go and Terraform.
Getting hired by a startup from abroad
Startups are often the easiest way into the Norwegian and Swedish tech market. Many hire internationally, work in English and are willing to sponsor a work permit at the salary level it requires, so ask about sponsorship early.
If you need a visa, a proven route is to start with a remote part-time, freelance or consultant role for a startup in Norway or Sweden, show what you can do, and then get hired full-time with visa sponsorship. Once they know your work, that's a much smaller step for the company than hiring an unknown applicant from abroad.
